How to measure Undercut .010 Deep?

Paragraph 9.25 of the American Welding Society Structural Welding Code D 1.1 states that the quality of undercut welds 9.25.1.5 shall not exceed 0.010 in (0.25 mm) in depth when the weld is transverse to the main stress in the part which is undercut.
